In 1993, Anderson School and Columbia Development Companies began to explore the construction of a new educational center, which would serve students with special needs, and would therefore need to meet specific health, safety and code issues. The existing school´s buildings were built circa 1930 and did not meet today’s building codes and school facility standards. These existing buildings were beyond cost effective renovations. Total rehab of these buildings to conform to New York State law would have been more expensive than a new structure.
By building a new educational center, all of the mentioned deficiencies were corrected. Classrooms were sized properly, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements were met, NY Energy Code compliance was achieved, and the new school meets all fire and safety regulations.
