Albany Business Reviews: Preservation awards piling up for Renaissance Albany Hotel

If you buy a decaying urban building in upstate New York and spend more than $48 million renovating it into a contemporary luxury hotel with whimsical nods to local history, you are sure to draw the attention of preservationists.

That’s what happened at Renaissance Albany, a 203-room Marriott hotel across the street from the Capitol in Albany.

Three awards have now been given to Columbia Development Cos. for the conversion of what was originally the Dewitt Clinton, a once-prominent hotel that fell on hard times and became low-income senior housing before closing and sitting empty for several years.
